WITH THE AIM of promoting the leadership values of Ninoy and Cory Aquino, the iamninoy-iamcory youth movement conducted a seminar on good governance for student leaders of the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) last January 29, 2010.

During the first half of the one-day seminar, Mr. Boom Enriquez, director for community development of the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF), introduced the aims and goals of the iamninoy-iamcory youth movement. He also stressed that the movement is strictly non-partisan, especially in the light of the upcoming 2010 presidential elections.

After the introduction and discussion of the ideals of the iamninoy-iamcory movement, a film showing featuring the acclaimed-documentary The Last Journey of Ninoy was shown to the students in order for them to get to know both Ninoy and Cory Aquino more. The documentary film highlighted the spiritual transformation that Ninoy Aquino underwent before he came to be known the hero that he is today. The film also showed the last interview of President Corazon Aquino before she passed away in 2009.

In a follow-up to the film showing, Dr. Elisa Maligalig, PWU Director for Student Affairs, shared her insights about the film and recounted her experiences during the dark days of Martial Law, which she described as a period of political repression and suppression of the rights and liberties of the people. She also narrated her participation in the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, during which she brought her then two-year old son at the time for them to become part of that momentous event, which eventually brought back the freedom we now have.

For the last half of the program, the Ateneo-based Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan-Citizenship by Good Example (SLB) conducted a voters’ education orientation and seminar. During which, the SLB urged first time voters to carefully choose the country’s future leaders not only based on their credentials or names but on their track records in public service, vision, platforms, character, values and integrity, as well.

In closing, PWU student leaders also voiced out their opinions and feelings regarding the country’s current political situation and hoped for the betterment and well-being of the Filipino people.
